Google Drive Pro Tip

If you are wanting to upgrade your Google storage to 100gb then upgrade on an iOS device. As far as I can tell, Android works the same way it does on the desktop which is monthly and $1.99 per month. On an iOS device you pay cheaper and you pay yearly instead of monthly.

The odd thing is you cannot do this on an Android device. I tried to purchase more Drive storage via the Drive app on my Nexus 5X and it kicks me out the browser and opens the same Drive upgrade page as using a browser on the desktop. Clearly this is a move to get iOS users to start using Drive on their devices, saving $5 or getting 2 months free is a good start in my opinion. This is an IAP on iOS and the money comes from your Apple account so buy an iTunes Gift Card and start using more storage on Google Drive.

To access the upgrade in Drive:
  • Tap the settings gear on the lower left of Drive (next to your email address)
  • Tap Storage
  • Upgrade Your Storage

Xbox Elite Controller

The Good

  • Four grip buttons lessen the need to move thumbs off the sticks
  • Hair-trigger switch is useful for first-person shooters
  • Swappable, taller analog sticks make fine control a bit easier
  • Nice rubberized grips
  • Solid build quality and pleasing black-and-silver aesthetic

The Bad

  • Rear grip buttons are much too sensitive and make holding the controller somewhat awkward
  • Replacement d-pad feels a bit too squishy
  • Rounded analog stick option is slippery and near-useless

The Ugly

  • Paying $150 for a few features you want and a bunch you probably don’t
via; Ars Technica

For the longest time I have said that the Playstation controller was the best controller. Not any longer. The PS4 controller sucks! The touch pad is way to big, the share and options button are flush and hard to press. Then the option button when it is not hard to press it is pressed accidentally because it is so close the square button. For me it is not comfortable to use!

I have been playing my Xbox One a lot and I actually much prefer the Xbox One controller over the PS4 controller. It feels more natural even though it is more bulky and much heavier. I will be buying an Elite controller at some point, probably not on day 1 though. I would love to see Sony come out with something similar because they really need something different. The PS controller design is flat and boring!

Slow Fast Slow

Slow Fast Slow is a video editing application for the iPhone that allows you to speedup or slowdown your videos on your iPhone. You can also trim clips or even reverse clips so that they play, well, in reverse! Slow Fast Slow is free to download in the App Store. Slow Fast Slow is iPhone only.

I use Slow Fast Slow often, especially the reverse clip aspect, before importing my videos to edit in Cameo. Slow Fast Slow is probably my second most used video editing application on my iPhone for mobile editing. It is a well designed application, easy to use with a learning curve level of ZERO! Slow Fast Slow works really well with Slo-Mo videos that you have shot on your iPhone. While I do not shoot slo-mo videos often on my iPhone, I normally slow them down with Slow Fast Slow, I have played with the slo-mo videos and imported them to Slow Fast Slow and it works exceptionally well.

The features of Slow Fast Slow:
• 240 fps videos (iPhone 6 and 6 Plus) can be slowed down to 1/16 speed, which is twice as slow as the built in camera app. • Pitch Control: Retain the correct audio pitch even when the video is sped up or slowed down. • Backwards playback. • Add and remove points to adjust the timeline. • Export videos in the original ratio or square.

I have tried to use the pitch control in Slow Fast Slow, personally I prefer to mute the audio all together for any video where I have adjusted the speed. I prefer to add music to my clips and feel that gives the video a better creative flow. I didn’t mention this in my video review but it is a feature of the app.

Also mentioned in my video preview, at the end, was the Glif from Studio Neat. Highly recommended. You can purchase the Glif in app using Apple Pay. I own one and love it. The Glif is my most used 3rd party iPhone accessory.

Cameo - Video Editor and Movie Maker

Cameo is a terrific video editor built for the iPhone, it is developed by the fine folks over at Vimeo. Cameo is probably my most used video editor, mostly because Vimeo is my most used service for hosting videos. That is not the only reason though, Cameo is a really well-built, easy to use, feature packed video editing application for the iPhone. Some of those features include the following:
  • High quality custom themes (8 total)
  • Add titles
  • Select from a wide range of audio/music to add to your film
  • Trim clips
  • Share to Vimeo’s gorgeous ad-free service
  • Choose from customer fonts and font color
  • More..
Cameo makes editing mobile video so easy and delightful. You can trim your clips by dragging the handle-bars left or right, or you can long press on a handle-bar to get an even more precise trim down to the tenth of a second. Duplicate clips on the timeline to adjust and trim only the portion of the clip that you want in your film. Add titles to each clip, boost or mute sound from a desire clip. Add custom theme filters to give your film the right color look, and the great part is that Cameo will automatically color match that look across all the clips in your film. Lastly, add from a plethora of musical genres to give your film the perfect musical score to enhance your film for better storytelling.

The most important aspect of any film is the editing, the equipment used does not matter as much if the story is interesting. An interesting storyline can be ruined if the editing is sloppy. With Cameo the editing takes something that is normally a difficult task and simplifies it by making video editing simple and elegant. The best part of Cameo is that it is always in your pocket so you can edit on the go. With mobile video blowing up exponentially in the last few years, especially with social media services like Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Tumblr, Google+, Vine, Instagram, and of course Vimeo all being popular destinations to upload video to, using Cameo to make those videos great is a no-brainer!

The best part about Cameo? It is absolutely free to download; Cameo - Video Editor and Movie Maker - Vimeo, LLC

Reflector + Reflector Director

NOTE: This is a two-part review, I will be reviewing both Reflector as well as Reflector Director for iOS. The reason being is that Reflector Director does not work without Reflector so reviewing both applications makes a more complete review. Also, I will only be reviewing the Mac version of Reflector. While Reflector does offer a Windows app, I am a Mac user and do not own a Windows computer nor do I have Windows installed on my Mac via Bootcamp.

Have you ever wanted to mirror your iPad or iPhone to your Mac? Do not own a Mac? What about to your Windows computer then? How about to an Amazon fireTV? If you have answered yes to any of those above then Reflector 2 is the application you are looking for. Reflector is a powerful screen-capturing, device mirroring application available for both the Mac and Windows. It only cost $14.99, but if you are not sure if it is right for you there is a 7-day free trial!

What is mirroring good for?
Streaming movies or videos to your device that doesn’t support AirPlay for one. Your Mac supports AirPlay but it doesn’t support inbound AirPlay connections, with Reflector running on your Mac it now does support inbound AirPlay, and it works flawlessly! Play an iPad/iPhone game on your huge 27” iMac screen, with Reflector now you can. Just to name a few ways I find mirroring my iPad to my iMac to be extremely useful.

Features:

  • Smart layouts
  • Real-time mirroring
  • Emphasize devices
  • Frames
  • Show & hide devices
  • Full screen mode
  • Record your screen with voice-over
  • Embed Frames
  • Multiple device recording
  • Security option

With Reflector 2 you now have the option to physically record your screen mirrors. There is no need for other 3rd party applications to record as you can do so all within the Reflector application. There are a plethora of options for recording as well, you can choose to show the desktop if you like or you can add a curtain to your desktop and choose a colored background instead. You do have the option to choose which color you would like to show on the background as well.

You have several recording options, those options range from 4K, 1080p, 720p, and all the way down to 420p depending on your recording needs. Not only can you choose the recording resolution you also have the ability to adjust the Frames Per Second or FPS. You can adjust the FPS settings from 15 FPS up to 60 FPS. Additionally you can choose video quality also, from High Quality to Low Quality, again depending on your recording needs.

For more of the settings of Reflector be sure to check out my video preview of Reflector and Reflector Director.

How do I use Reflector?

I started using Reflector several years ago, I believe around end of 2012, maybe early 2013. I can’t quite remember when it launched but I know I was there in the beginning of it being able to be mirrored to my Mac. I know AirPlay came out in 2010 and I believe mirroring was added later, around June of 2011. I started doing video reviews of iPad apps for this very site and I have not looked back yet. Of course I was using Reflector 1 and now I am using Reflector 2, I will get into the differences in a bit. One thing I will say as someone who has used Reflector for several years now, I have never had a single issue and the application has worked flawlessly! Matter of fact I would say without Reflector I probably would not have kept up with this site. I love doing the video-casts and/or app previews and Reflector enables me to do them and has enabled me to do them since the early days. Matter of fact, I have been using Reflector since it was called Reflection, here is a barely watched YouTube video I uploaded in January 2013.

I would say Reflector has played a huge part in both my desire to do app reviews as well as continuing to write about applications on the iPad. I find that including a video review of the application I am reviewing to not only be more rewarding to the reader but also more enjoyable for myself. I write about these applications as a hobby, I am not paid to write them, I only do so because I enjoy talking about the iPad and the apps I use. Adding video demonstrations to these reviews also allows those that don’t care to read what I write instead watch the video review. Also, I have a much larger audience on Google+ and YouTube than I do that visit this site. That means my videos reach a much larger audience. Reflector allows me to do the video reviews than I want while allowing me to share my hobby with others around the world.

I also use Reflector to record some of my iPad gameplay. I recently started playing a game called Empires & Allies. I have been using Reflector to share strategies with my alliance members. I also started uploading a few of these videos to YouTube to share with others who are playing the game. I have been sharing some of my strategies for both offense and defense as well as how I setup my base defenses and how to achieve certain task in the game. So if you have dreams of becoming the next YouTube Let's Play millionaire then you will want to purchase Reflection to get started with creating awesome game highlights.

Other Features

Reflector also offers a in-app security options such as on-screen AirPlay codes so that you must enter a 4-digit code on your Mac before another device can connect to your machine. You also have the option to allow or deny a device before it connects to your machine. There is another feature called Quick Connect that is a 6-digit code that is used for AirParrot, again keeping your devices only connected with your devices. While I have never personally run into a situation where I have had others trying to connect to my machines. I assume these would be helpful in situations like living in an apartment complex or using Reflector in an office building.

YouTube Streaming and Webcam Video are both coming soon.

Stream device screens directly to YouTube in real time. Invite others to watch your screen from anywhere in the world. Add webcam video to recordings for a personal touch and feel.

Reflector is also very useful to:

Reflector Director

Director is an iOS only application that works on both the iPad and iPhone. Director allows you to manage devices that you have connected to the Reflector app running on your Mac and choose which devices you want to record while allowing you to hide the other devices. There are plenty of customization options as well, choose between a white or black iOS device face. Choose between gold, space gray, or silver colored device. You can also choose between devices from iPhone 5, 5s, 5c, 6, 6 Plus, iPod, iPad and iPad mini all depending on which device you have connected to Reflector. The iPod and iPhone 5c also allow you to choose from the colors those devices come in such as pink, yellow, green, coral, and more. In addition you can also choose to show or hide the frame of the device if you just want to mirror the screen but not actually show which device you are using. There is also an option to scale your device to stretch to fit on the screen, the actual size, or best for Retina. There are orientation settings for automatic, forced landscape and forced portrait. Lastly, you have the option to start or stop recoding right within the Director application.

The great thing about Director is you can also manage non-iOS devices such as an Android tablet or phone that is connected via Google Cast to your Mac. Even better you have the ability to connect multiple devices to Reflector and then manage them all within Reflector Director on your iPad or iPhone. This is great if you want to preview what is on the screen of a device before you actually bring it front and center while you are recording. A lot of times I will review applications and want to show both iPad and iPhone versions, this is a great way to do that without having both devices on the screen at the same time. While I don’t do many Android reviews, if I ever wanted to review an app that has both an iOS and Android version this would be a great way to manage all those devices and gives me the ability to enhance my presentations professional look. I have tried doing side-by-side app comparisons before and it wasn’t the best experience, of course I wasn’t using Reflector 2 then because it didn’t exist yet. Reflector 2 solves these issues that I previously had and managing them within Reflector Director is a cinch.

If you are using AirParrot you can also send your device or screen to any AirParrot enabled machine. I don’t use AirParrot nor have I ever used it so I can’t give an opinion of how the service works. I do know that it allows you to share more than just your screen, you can also share files such as video, audio, and documents.

Final Thoughts

I do not have a single negative comment to make about Reflector, as someone who has personally used this product for about 3 years I highly recommended it. If you are still unsure about buying Reflector then consider downloading the free 7-day trial and testing it out to see how flawlessly it works. In my opinion it is the absolute best way to mirror your device, no matter if it you are using an iPad, iPhone or Android device to a Mac.

Switcher Studio

Switcher Studio is a mobile video app that lets you sync up to four iPhones and iPads to record and stream LIVE video to services like YouTube and Ustream. Insert photos and graphic overlays, manage multi-view effects, and more.

I have not yet played with this so I cannot give my opinion on it yet. I just wanted to share this because it looks very interesting both because it is related to iPad and video production, two of my passions. The app is free to download, and I believe they offer a free service as well. For more information head over to the Switcher Studio website.

Gravie - Text on Video

This is a short review of Gravie for the iPad. Gravie is a universal application and will work with the iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch as long as you are running at least iOS 6.0 and greater. Gravie is $1.99 in the App Store!

Gravie allows you to add text, text animations, clipart, clipart animations, filter effects (5) to your video, crop the video to different aspect ratios such as 1:1, 4:3, and 16:9, you can also import photos and/or audio tracks to add to your video. Gravie also has some sharing options such as YouTube, Facebook and export to camera roll. Once you get the hang of how to use Gravie you can create some wonderful video art.

You can choose from just under 100 graphic templates, there are plenty of themes to choose from, different visual filters that can be applied to your videos, you can also use your built-in camera to shoot footage within the application and then edit that footage within the app! You can also stitch together multiple videos to create a single composite clip. So much more.

Gravie is the fast and easy video making app that lets you make amazing videos at your fingertips.
Make your own video in minutes using our themes, graphic templates, clip arts. Record your own video or select from the recorded clips and recreate using various effects and styles.

That is the description given to Gravie within iTunes. It is fast, and it does let you make some amazing videos, but I am not so sure about the easy part! I feel it has a small learning curve because some of the functions do not feel as intuitive as I would like. I do not want to diminish the usefulness of the app by sounding negative but I also want to be honest in this short review. As an example; placing the in-points and out-points of text or clipart took me about 30 minutes or so to realize what exactly I needed to do. Then it took me about another 30 minutes to realize that I could not edit the audio track I imported, in other words you cannot start a song in the middle of the track. You can add music but it must start from the beginning. That does not work that well for all videos that you upload to Vine or Instagram, because they are so short and a lot of songs need to lead up to the punch to coincide with the video.

Another issue I ran into with Gravie is that it crashes when trying to use the “More Sharing Options.” While it is annoying that one of the features of the app does not work, you can easily to save to your camera roll and then upload to whichever service you choose using the app of said service. I do not consider that a deal breaker. One thing to note, this app has not been updated in about 5 months (December 2014) and iOS has had at least 2 updates since then and Gravie probably just needs to be updated to reflect those iOS changes. As far as I can tell everything else works flawlessly.

Would I recommend Gravie? Sure! For only $1.99 and the fact that it is universal I would say it is worth the purchase price when you consider how much you can do with this application. It does not offer any in-app purchases so for only $1.99 you are getting everything this app has to offer, which is a lot!

GLIF by Studio Neat

I purchased the Glif via the Slow Fast Slow app on my iPhone a couple of weeks ago.

What is the Glif?
Glif is a tripod mount for your smartphone. It works with almost any device, at least it works with all the devices I have; which include: iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6, iPhone 5, iPhone 4s, and Nexus 4. It is fully adjustable, those adjustments are made using the included hex key and you simply slide the bracket apart or closer together depending on your device width. You can also use the Glif as a kickstand to prop up your iPhone (or whichever smartphone you carry) for typing or watching Vimeo videos.

What does it cost?
The Glif cost $30 and if you are on an iPhone you can use Apple Pay right within the app, like I did. Simply download the Slow Fast Slow app for free in the App Store, then tap the Studio Neat icon in the lower left of the app to open the direct link to purchase the Glif. Once you open up the store simply tap the Apple Pay button on the bottom of the screen. That is it, a few days later your Glif will arrive in a beautifully packaged cylinder.

What is included?
You will get the Glif tripod mount, you will get the hex tool used for adjusting the width of the Glif, and finally you will also get a keychain attachment that allows you to carry your Glif everywhere with you! Did I mention the beautifully designed cylinder it comes in? Yeah, you get that too and it is worth keeping! If fits great inside my camera bag.
