Google Pixel case, I am not impressed

I recently bought a case for my Google Pixel from the Google store, it was the clear case for the Pixel. Now when I bought this I knew it was a “cheap” case that wasn’t meant to offer much drop protection, it was just meant to keep the phone from getting scratched.

This is the entire description of the case on the product page;
“The ultra-thin design helps protect without adding unnecessary bulkiness, and allows quick, precise access to all your buttons and sensors.”
I didn’t buy the case to avoid scratches or help keep it safe from accidental drops, I bought it so I could stick a metal tab that would allow the phone to attach to my magnetic windshield car mount to hold my phone while I am driving.

But man-o-man did Google cut some corners with this case. This case has to be the cheapest quality case they could find in terms of build quality, and it cost $30. This is no more than a $5 or $10 case that I could find on Amazon all day long, except for the fact that there are not many cases for the Google Pixel on Amazon. I opted for the case from Google because I figured it was a high quality case, just like the cases I buy from Apple for my iPhone. I am not trying to compare oranges to apples here (pun intended) between Google and Apple as companies; but, the cases I buy from Apple, you can tell they are of higher quality than the cheap cases you find on Amazon.

The edges of this case that stick up over the side of the phone could very well result in “paper cut” like cuts it is so sharp. Overall, it is a truly horrible case throughout - poor design, cheaply made, and offers zero protection from pretty much anything, especially my fingers from cuts! Checkout this Vine of the edges of the cases, it probably doesn't do it justice, but trust me, the edges are sharps and raised; https://vine.co/v/52IxqqexFJa.

Google should be ashamed of themselves for even selling this to their customers! With that said, it does serve the purpose I bought it for! If you are wondering about the mount, it this mount from Logitech: Logitech Drive One Car Mount.

The Phantom 4 is a beast

This morning my Phantom 4 took about a 100-foot swan dive into the frozen tundra. 2 broken props, a few scratches but that is it. I swapped out the battery, changed the props and I was back flying again within 3 minutes.

I thought it was over; but nope, this joker took the beat down and got back up ready to fight!

I have to give it to DJI, they don't promote this as being able to take heavy damage, but I have crashed this maybe 3 or 4 times in the year (almost) of owning it and it still flies like it did on day 1.

PS; crashing is not recommended - don't try this at home...

How to Change Outfits in STEEP

This is probably the most asked question I have seen about the game. When you first play the game you will see some play tutorials, you will need to complete those to open up the character adjustment window. On the PlayStation you will hit the Options button once you have completed the the tutorials, I believe you need to get bronze in the 3 race during the tutorial to complete the tutorial and open the Options. On the PC you will hit the ESC button to access the Options menu.

Another question I have seen;
Is there grinding in the game? No.

Also, be sure to sign up for Ubisoft Club (https://club.ubisoft.com), once you do you will unlock up to 10 free items that you can use in STEEP. Some of those rewards include the Crash Test Dummy costume, Red Bull Helicopter tickets, Kevin Rolland's Backpack, and The North Face Gateway Beanie.

Be sure to checkout my STEEP Playlist on YouTube, I will be updating it weekly with tips and tricks, new play videos, how-to's, etc.;

"Whenever you purchase a Crown Crate, you will always be awarded four items, with the chance to get a fifth item. 2001: A Space Odyssey

Some interesting facts; I have watched this film 57 times since November 10, 2014. Well over a 100 times altogether.

The bedroom pictured below, from the film, doesn't have any doors, only a door to the bathroom.

Everyone thinks the monolith is from Aliens, it might be, but I don't think so. Aliens are never mentioned a single time in the film. The only instance of "alien" talk is during a meeting in the beginning of the film where the director mentions "intelligent life form."

The monolith shape is found throughout the film. Everything you look at is monolith shaped; well not everything, but a large portion of the film as rectangular objects. Kubrick even uses the monolith and 2001 "Easter Eggs" in other films. Like the burning monolith in Full Metal Jacket. Kubrick also uses the 7 diamonds you see at the end of 2001 in other films as well, including Full Metal Jacket, again.

Kubrick was a perfectionist, every thing is always centered (one-point perspective), but in this film he not only uses one-point perspective, everything always tilts 90 degrees. Even the monolith, the only time you see it when it is not vertical, it is floating in space at a 90 degree angle. Genius! So my question to you is, what the fuck is the monolith? Where did it come from?

Some people have the theory that it is a theater screen and we are looking at ourselves. The film originally had images being displayed on it; but, Kubrick removed them from the monolith because he didn't want it to be thought of as "an advanced television teaching machine," so what is it then?

The film God, Roger Ebert has some theories; http://www.rogerebert.com/rogers-journal/2001-the-monolith-and-the-message

"Q. What's that big black monolith? A. It's a big black monolith.

Q. Where did it come from? A. From somewhere else.

Q. Who put it there? A. Intelligent beings since it has right angles and nature doesn't make right angles on its own."

Another terrific source, and someone who has put a lot of these 2001 ideas into my head is Roger Ager; http://www.collativelearning.com/2001%20chapter%202.html

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare pisses me off

A few days ago there were people exploiting the new Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare game where they could score up to 65,000 points in a single round of Capture the Flag (CTF) by using the FTL soldier with FTL jumped enabled. This glitch would work if they took the flag in CTF, faced a wall, used the FTL jump feature in the game (you needed to be level 23 to have FTL jump) and it would drop and pickup the flag giving them points each time this occurred. So basically they would just spam the pick up / drop flag feature for points. If you look at the short video above you can see what it looked like in game when playing.

The glitch sucked because nobody wanted to play CTF, they just wanted to boost the points. Infinity Ward ended up removing Capture the Flag completely from the game. CTF is the only mode I play in Call of Duty, I mean I will play Domination sometimes, but I much prefer CTF. I tried asking on Twitter when we could expect CTF to be put back into the game, I did not get an answer.

I have tried to check their Reddit page to see if there is any news about any updates;
https://www.reddit.com/r/Infinitewarfare/comments/5b1jet/updates_and_patch_notes_from_infinity_ward/

The only thing I can find is this:
"11/21/2016 - Patch Notes
Removal of 2XP icons
Fixes for people with Max Mission Team Ranks not being able to earn keys
Fixes for exploit in CTF"

I really want to play CTF over the holidays, it doesn't look promising at the moment. If they don't put CTF back in the game, I am going to start the process of reaching out to someone for a refund. I have already got a refund for the PC version of IW I purchased on Steam. The PC version is complete shit. Without CTF, the console version is shit too!

DJI Phantom 4 Holiday Gift Ideas

Reflax Labs Gaming Mouse Pad I use - $19 on Amazon; http://amzn.to/2cjKpJC

This is only an un-box / first look at the Logitech G900 mouse, I plan on doing a full review of the Logitech G900 Chaos Spectrum mouse in about a week or so, but just know this; The LOGITECH G900 is the best gaming mouse I have ever bought! It feels fantastic in the hand, it is light and when using this mouse wirelessly it is pinpoint accurate with zero lag when gaming! I highly recommend it!

iPhone 7 cases

All 3 Apple branded cases... If you are thinking of buying any of the 3 I'd recommend the battery case first. If you are not into the battery case then get the leather case from Apple.

The leather case feels much better than the last few iterations, especially the new button design. With the older leather cases, the button part of the case always wore down and made the button area flat and sometimes hard to press! These new leather cases not only look good, but they feel good in the hand. ;)

I don't really like the silicone case, it feels much more slippery compared to the iPhone 6/6s cases. It almost feels like the case has baby powder on it or something. If you have ever tried to bring back a deck of cards by sprinkling baby powder on them, then that is what this case feels like, it brings it back to life but too slippery.

Also, if you are wanting a case that makes the phone less slippery, then I would not recommend any of these options to help with that. The iPhone 7 is the most "un-slippery" iPhone since the iPhone 5s flat side iPhone's.

I am not really a case person, but I need a case for winter weather, so....

Cambond iPhone 7 Screen Protector

Cambond iPhone 7 screen protector is available on Amazon; http://amzn.to/2d3uYFb

If you have an iPhone 7 then you might want to consider protecting the screen, especially if you plan on trying to sell it next year when the next iPhone is released. A screen without scratches will result in a higher resale value.

If you have the black iPhone 7, tiny scratches or any scratches for that matter are much more visible than on the white iPhone. Scratches or "micro abrasions" are more visible in direct sunlight too, like when you are using your iPhone outside in the sun, they will show up more clearly.

This Cambond screen protector comes with all the accessories needed to apply the protector to your iPhone 7. You don't need to worry about bubbles as the protector is a harder plastic that will not bubble when you apply it to your iPhone 7. I have had the screen protector on my iPhone 7 for 3 days now without any issues. The screen still functions as it does without the screen protector on my iPhone 7.

You get 2 screen protectors in the box if you decide to remove it then you will have a backup screen protector. Also, there are zero issues using this screen protector with the Apple branded cases. I use a battery case from Apple and the screen protector does not interfere with the case fitting properly.

Cambond Bluetooth Wireless Speaker

 $19.99 on Amazon; http://amzn.to/2d3TxyV

If you are looking for a Bluetooth speaker to stream audio from your smart-phone then you should check out the Cambond Bluetooth Wireless speaker. This speaker comes in two colors; the blue you see here as well as a solid black speaker. Personally I liked the blue as it added some flavor to my desk!

The speaker has a nice, loud sound to it. I would say it is easily triple the output of what the phone speaker outputs. It has some nice bass in the music too, depending on the type of music you listen to then this is something you probably want when listening to music.

The speaker also has features such as volume control, forward/reverse to next or previous song, play and pause, as well as the ability to plug in a phone via AUX cable. It does come with both the charging cable and the AUX cable for a wired connection. You can also take calls on the speaker as well.

If you bought an iPhone 7 / 7 Plus then this might be something to consider. Yes, you can use the adapter to connect the iPhone to this speaker via AUX cable. I have tested it and it works great with an iPhone 7.

A speaker like this is great for both music as well as podcasts; but, you can also connect your phone to the speaker if you want to watch a video or movie on your phone but want a better or louder sound when watching.

Cambond Milanese Band for Fitbit Alta

I recently purchased a Fitbit Alta to use to track my outdoor activities and I wanted to get a couple of different bands for my Alta. The Cambond Milanese band for Fitbit Alta is a beautifully designed strap that makes my Fitbit Alta look more like a fashion piece than a fitness tracker. I will most likely wear this band when I am not working out but when I am wearing my Fitbit Alta throughout the day to track my steps walked. The black Cambond strap matches the black Alta perfectly, the band is very easy to replace and takes no longer than 30 seconds to remove the stock bands and replace them with the Cambond Milanese band.

Here are some details for the Cambond Fitbit Alta Milanese band. It will fit wrist sized; minimum 5.71 in / 14.5cm to maximum 9.06 in / 23cm. It comes in two colors; black and silver. It features a magnetic clasp that will lock the band in place. I found the magnet to be very strong! Also, if your hand is too large to slide the band over, you can easily attach one-side of the band to the Alta, then put the Alta on your wrist and attach the other side of the band to the Alta; obviously your hand is much wider/larger than your wrist but even so it isn't an issue. I haven't noticed the band pulling on my arm hairs, but I don't have very hairy wrist so that is something I really don't have to worry about.

If you are looking for a second strap for under $20 for your Fitbit Alta then I highly recommend checking out the Cambond Milanese band. Not only does it feel great on the wrist, it looks terrific too!

Reflex Labs Gaming Mouse Pad

I ordered a new gaming mouse pad on Amazon and it arrived today. It's from Reflex Labs, it is 36" long X 12" wide. It also is the tall mat, which you can choose between heavy or heavy tall. They also come in three sizes of length; 9", 15" or 36".

$19 on Amazon; http://amzn.to/2cjKpJC

I was using a Razer Firefly (https://youtu.be/-hl3GYEz8Fk) previously. I'll still use it but for certain games (BF / CoD) I need a larger pad area.

I like the thickness and mushy feel of the Reflex pad vs. hard surface area from Razer. Plus it will help with my keyboard from sliding when FPS gaming.

I have a short video of it here; https://twitter.com/tyrannicalchris/status/774307343274242048

Cambond Bluetooth Earphones

Looking for a nice pair of wireless Bluetooth earphones but you do not want to play a lot of money? Looking for an inexpensive pair of Bluetooth earphones to use when working out or jogging? Then you need to checkout the Cambond wireless 4.1 Bluetooth earphones which are only $28.99 on Amazon.

The Cambond wireless 4.1 Bluetooth earphones offer up to 10 hours of play time (with volume about 1/2 way up) on a full charge; a charge that only takes about 3 hours to charge from zero to full. The Cambond earphones are also rated IPX4 sweat-proof which makes them perfect for when working out or jogging! The earphones will work up to 10 meters or 30+ feet away from your phone too, so you can wear them in the office or house and not have to worry about carrying your phone with or losing connection when streaming music or listening to a podcast. Another great aspect of these earphones is that they are noise-canceling so you will not hear most distracting noises in the background while wearing this headphones.

I have had these headphones for about a week now and I am still no my first full battery charge. The sound is a nice balance of bass and mids but neither are drowned out by the other. The bass wasn't too thick but it had an overall nice balance to it, or at least for genre of music I listen to. They were loud enough that I never felt like I needed to raise the volume on them but they didn't bust my eardrums either. With any Bluetooth headphone/earphone when you compare it to a corded pair of headphone/earphones; of course most corded headphones/earphones are going to be louder, but I would say these are more than adequate for the majority of users. I would have not problem recommending them!

Some other notable features include the ability to play/pause music or adjust the volume with the volume rocker that is on the cable attaching one earphone to the other. You can also use these earphones to take phone calls which is a nice addition. If you have an Apple Watch or Android Watch you could answer calls on your watch and never have to take your phone out of your pocket, use the earphones to talk and hear the conversation. I tested there earphones with both my iPhone 6s Plus and my Nexus 5x and it connected with both devices via Bluetooth with zero issues.

In terms of wearing them they were decently comfortable, the body is a tad large but since they hand over your ear they are not heavy or they don't weigh your ear down while wearing them. The ear-hook is adjustable so they will fit most ears comfortably. The hook is something I think makes these better to wear than Bluetooth earphones without the hook, you never have to worry about them falling out of your ear as the hook keeps them in place. These earphones also come with different size rubber earplugs so you can fit them perfectly in your ear for an optimal user-experience. I plan on wearing these all winter, I can keep my phone in my pocket and not have to hassle with running a cable through my jacket just to listen to music when outside in 20 degree weather!

Belkin USB-C cable

I finally grabbed a USB-C to USB-A cable for my Nexus 5X, so I can use it with my Phantom 4.

I tested flying my 5x today in split-screen, it works but is buggy. I was using YouTube as the second app which is good if you want to Live Stream to YouTube from the Phantom 4 and will enable you to actually see comments that you can respond to in the YouTube app when in split-screen. Currently only Facebook allows you to see comments and you can't respond to those either other than commenting verbally.

I grabbed my 3-foot cable on Amazon for $23.. it supports USB 2.0, 3.0, and 3.1.

ChromaGun on Steam (Mac, Windows, Linux)

ChromaGun a fun puzzler, I have enjoyed playing ChromaGun for hours and hours, it is nice to relax from the fast paced run and gun FPS I normally play. If you are looking for a relaxing game that you can sit back and enjoy while working your brain muscle instead of your fingers and wrist reflexes then check out ChromaGun. Highly recommended!

ChromaGun is only $12.99 in the Steam Store; http://store.steampowered.com/app/408650/

"ChromaGun is a first person puzzler about colors. The basic principle is as easy as applying it is complex: Exit the chambers via the exit doors. Use the ChromaGun to colorize walls and WorkerDroids to progress in the chambers. WorkerDroids (the players’ main cause of headaches in ChromaGun) are attracted to walls of the same color and can be used for a variety of tasks like opening doors, activating triggers or removing the danger of deadly electrified floor-tiles by mercilessly sacrificing them. ChromaGun encompasses eight chapters of mind-melting puzzles and witty background-narrative."

Cambond 12 inch Lightning Cable for iPhone (Phantom 4)

I wanted a shorter USB 2.0 to Lightning cable to use with my Phantom 4 and my iPhone or iPad for when flying my Phantom 4 drone. I found this cable on Amazon and it does the job.

Buy Cambond 12-inch cable on Amazon; http://amzn.to/2btE9gY

I like the fact that the cable is not only much shorter than the cable that came with my iPhone 6s Plus, but also it is braided so it will be tangle free. The gold tips match my iPhone 6s Plus more or less, there is a slight difference but it is not noticeable unless you are holding this close up and looking closely at the two gold colored items.

The cable comes in six different colors; black, silver, gray, gold, full gold, and solid silver. Pick the cable that matches your iPhone if you want.

Update: When I bought this cable it was only $11.99, it seems to have went up since then, after uploading this video it now shows as $13.99.

How to Create a Call of Duty Glitch Text Title

In this demo, I am using Motion 5 which is an OS X only application. I don't use After Effects but I would assume most of the filter effects are in AE as well. Since Motion is Mac only you would need a Mac to use Motion 5.

This is not the exact effect that is used in Call of Duty; but, it is very similar. You do not need the third-part plugin I used in this demo but I think it adds an excellent element to the text title and it looks much better with it than without it, but that is subjective.

WinnerGear's MICFLIP 2 Reversible USB / Micro USB cable

I previously reviewed the MICFLIP 1 cable, but WinnerGear just launched the MICFLIP 2 cable. The big difference in version 1 from version 2 is that the cable is now reversible on both ends of the cable. The USB Type-A plug is reversible as well as the micro USB plug being reversible.

In the 5 or 6 months of owning the MICFLIP 1, it is probably my second most used cable behind the Lightning cable that came with my iPhone. Not only is it a nice looking, well built, tangle-free cable; but, both ends of the cable being reversible is a Godsend! I am constantly plugging in cameras to my iMac to get videos files off them, or to charge them and now having the Type A end be reversible as well is terrific. The ports on my iMac are on the back of the machine, the way my machine sits, you can't see the ports on the back of the iMac so I am always reaching in the blind when I plug in cables to my iMac. Now I don't have to fiddle with the cables as much since both ends are reversible, well worth the money just for one less irritating thing to deal with.

A bit about the MICFLIP 2 reversible cable;

  • Braided cable - Which means it is tangle-free
  • It features an aluminum shell
  • Gold coating - Which means it is corrosion resistance
  • Comes in 3 different colors - silver, gold, red/black
  • Comes in 3 sizes - 20cm (8 inches), 100cm (3 ft+), 200cm (6ft+)

Ricoh Theta S

360º cameras / videos are all the rage these days, luckily they are not that expensive! I recently took this to Disney World with me to film some videos of my daughter and I riding on roller coasters, the few rides that Disney had that were outdoors came out great. Sadly all the fun coasters at Disney are all indoors – Rock 'N Roller Coaster, Tower of Terror, Space Mountain, etc. With that said, the Theta S doesn't do well in low light situations but when you are outdoors with the sun shining bright, the Theta S does an exceptional job, highly recommended.

The fun factor of the Theta S alone makes it worth the purchase price in my mind, then when you take into consideration that 360º video and photography are going to become a norm really soon, you might as well get started with the technology now instead of waiting for it become a normal part of every day photography and filmmaking. 360º offers a unique way of recording memorable moments – like riding a roller coaster, now I can see the track and the look on my face all in a single video!

A few tidbits to keep in mind; you will need to download either the Android or iPhone app to view and edit your videos, unless you know how to edit in Final Cut Pro X or Premiere, or some other video editing application. The mobile app makes it easy to edit and it has built-in sharing features to Facebook. Learning about 360º video has a slight learning curve when it comes to editing those video files, if you are using Final Cut Pro X and want to learn more about 360º and how to edit them, I recommend checking out this post; https://fcpx.tumblr.com/post/146409073958.

I plan on doing a more detailed review of the Theta S applications and some of the other features of the camera when using the app in another post. Stay tuned!

DragonSoul for iPhone and iPad

DragonSoul is free to download in the iPhone/iPad App Store and the Google Play Store for Android. I have been playing this game non-stop for about a week now. I know it has been out a while, but I just discovered it in the App Store. I don't play too many mobile games, but this is the best game I have played since Kingdom Rush. DragonSoul is a fun fantasy game with wizards and dragons so of course the nerd in me enjoyed it from the day I downloaded it. There are a ton of different modes in the game such as campaign, fight pit, expedition, and more. You can also join a guild and battle other guilds if you choose. If you are looking for a fun game that has a group chat type environment on your mobile device then you should give DragonSoul a shot on your phone or tablet. It is free to download and play so why not?

Why I returned the DJI Osmo

This is sort of a review of the DJI Osmo; as well as my thoughts on the Osmo and how I wished things had worked out. Before I get started, the entry level DJI Osmo retails for $569, that is what I purchased, so that is what I am reviewing. As with my Phantom 4, there are plenty of accessories for the Osmo as well, which will increase the price, some of the accessories are necessary in my opinion but not required, such as extra batteries. This is my experience with the Osmo and why I returned the Osmo after using it for about three weeks.

A bunch of meh’s..

Let me start off with the issues I had with the Osmo that led me to return it, then I will talk about a few of the good things about the Osmo. First things first, the Osmo is sort of clunky to handle, along with being a tad on the heavy side, especially if you are using it with an iPhone 6s Plus or other large smart-phone. What I mean by clunky is if you are using the Osmo but need to set it down it starts beeping because the gimbal I suppose detects that it is not longer free-hanging (for lack of a better term) then when you pick it back up I noticed that it took a minute or so before it would snap back into place, or center itself. If you are in a shooting session, you may not have one or two minutes to wait for the hardware to be ready to go again. Of course not every situation requires me to lay the Osmo down, but this is just something I noticed when I happened to do so. I also noticed that my iPhone screen, while in the DJI Go app would go black for no apparent reason and I would have to wait for the app to relaunch as well. It is very frustrating when this happens, it always seemed to happen in a crucial moment. The screen blacking out might have been an issue with the Go app itself and maybe an update to the app or the firmware of the Osmo will address this?

I noticed several times that the gimbal would just stop working, I am not sure what is going on but the Osmo would just totally ignore any command from the thumb-stick or any action performed on the iPhone in the Go app. More or less the Osmo would become useless. I consistently had issues when using the iPhone as a view finder, the experience is really buggy — a totally different experience of that versus using my iPhone with my Phantom 4. Something else I noticed that seemed to be a major issue; a lot of times my iPhone display would be a second or two behind what I am filming (lag), which can be nerve-racking if you are trying to get a perfect shot but you can’t tell if your shot is framed properly due to the poor performance.

Which leads me to my one of may biggest gripes — I have no idea why DJI decided to connect the Osmo to the iPhone (or smart-phone) over WiFi versus a wired connection of some sort like I do with my Phantom 4. I feel this would have totally made the Osmo a much better experience versus doing everything over WiFi. Not to mention the fact that using the OSMO over WiFi means I have to default to cellular if I want to stream to Periscope or Facebook Live for instance. Heck, as unreliable as it is, I would almost rather connect via Bluetooth just to be able to stay connected to WiFi while using the Osmo. Again, I bring up the Phantom 4, which connects to the remote controller via Lightning cable and works flawlessly. Even the Phantom 4 video feed is sent wirelessly to the remote, but it works perfectly. I don’t think I have ever experienced any sort of feed lag? If I have, I have not noticed it.

Battery life — all I can say; it is not that as great as DJI claims, at least not in my experience. DJI claims about 1-hour and 30-minutes, I am lucky if I get half of that, I’d say about 50 minutes is what I was getting on average. I did not do an actual real-world time test before returning it, but I do know that I was not getting 90 minutes! Personally though, even only getting an hour is more than enough in my opinion for all the Osmo is doing with such a small battery. Just like my Phantom 4, I have purchased several additional batteries, luckily the Osmo batteries are much cheaper @ only $35 each. Even though battery life was not a determining factor in me returning the Osmo, it was another issue that I did have with the Osmo itself.

Shooting in low light is not that great, I didn’t consider this a deal breaker as I mostly shoot in well lit situations, but I feel I should mention this to anyone who is thinking about purchasing the Osmo. When I tested my Osmo in low light, the result was a lot of grain (expected) and I could never get it to focus on my subject in low light, or well lit situations; more on that in a bit. Of course the darks or shadows were way too dark as the Osmo didn’t perform as well as I would have liked. I read a lot of reviews before deciding to purchase the Osmo; so, I decided that low light shooting was something that I didn’t really need to worry about as I mentioned, I rarely shoot in low light.

Focusing is atrocious. It was probably the biggest issue and the deciding factor in me returning my Osmo. If I was just running and gunning, shooting large object that did not require me to focus on, it was fine. When I would try to pin point a subject, move in for a close shot, the Osmo just ignored focusing altogether, which is something that I required for my line of work. Again, this is probably something a firmware update might be able to address; but, it was something that I couldn’t wait for.

I really don’t think I need to mention this as every review you find online is going to say the same exact thing; the built-in microphone SUCKS! What DJI should have done was included the cold shoe for external microphones since the microphone that shipped with the Osmo is such a piece of poop. DJI does sell the quick release cold shoe and a small external Flexi microphone, both are cheap at about $10 each. I still have both pieces, maybe I will give them away to someone who needs them?

Ultimately, the Osmo failed in the 3 situations that I would consider maybe the most important situation in filming:

  1. Focusing - The Osmo just doesn’t focus or at least I found it very difficult to get it to focus on certain subjects when filming.

  2. Framing my shot - Due to issues with with the Osmo connecting to my mobile device, I found it very hard to get my shots in frame. What I mean by that is, with the delay I would sometimes experience, I could not tell if I was getting the shot that I was filming. I could be filming something only to find out later the top half of my subject was cutoff due to not being able to see my subject in real-time. Just to note, this didn’t happen every single time I filmed, but it happened enough that it bothered me.

  3. Audio - The audio is dismal with the Osmo, I purchased several external microphones and it just seemed no matter which microphone I tried there always seemed to be an issue. The fact that DJI shipped the Osmo with such a poor internal microphone is telling that the product might not have been ready for primetime. The audio issues could be solved by recording externally, but I sort of like having an easy, all-in-one solution.

If you can’t focus, if you can’t frame your shot, and if you are constantly having audio issues with your camera, you might as well not even try filming anything.

What I do indeed like..

I know it seemed like there isn’t much to like about the Osmo, but indeed there are. I think first and probably most importantly is the quality of the video output! Most of the videos I shot with the Osmo were fantastic looking, the panning was buttery smooth, the 4K looked fantastic when I uploaded test footage to YouTube and Vimeo.

The gimbal is really steady, even when walking without the Z-axis attachment. You can see a slight amount of bounce but to be honest it feels more natural when shooting certain situations. I would recommend purchasing the Z-axis if you do buy an Osmo — I did not purchase the Z-axis myself; but, I would have if I kept the Osmo. Back to the gimbal, it pans really smooth when using the thumb-stick to the control the camera when panning left to right it and keeping the camera locked onto my subject — I was extremely happy in both situations. North to south or south to north wasn’t as great as side-to-side, but it still looked fantastic when I did test using the Osmo in different shooting situations.

I also think the price is great for what you get, issues aside. For less than $600 you are getting an electronic steady cam with an awesome camera built-in. So if you can overcome some of the faults of the Osmo, then this is a great deal. For my particular needs, I just couldn’t ignore the issues I was having with the camera.

Final Thoughts

There are a ton of reviews on YouTube or online that praise the Osmo. I am not knocking it, I am just writing about the issues I had with mine. Maybe a firmware update will address some of these issues, such as the focusing being poor. I could fix the audio issue by recording externally. Maybe my Osmo was a dud? Maybe I just suck as a videographer?

I have seen plenty of reviews that praise it, but I have also read plenty of reviews that have the same gripes that I had with the Osmo I purchased. Ultimately, the tools we purchase have to work for our needs — if those tools don’t work as we need them to work then we have to find another tool that does. In this case, the Osmo didn’t work the way I needed it to work. I am sure if and when DJI releases a second generation Osmo that a lot of these shortcomings will be addressed. I am huge DJI fan, I own several of their other products and I will continue to be a fan and purchase more of their products in the future!

Do parabolic signal boosters work?

This is my first test with the Skyreat parabolic signal boosters. Did it help boost my signal any?

I plan on doing 3 or 4 more test with these signal boosters before giving a final verdict on them. Stay tuned. I am not knocking them or disclaiming they don't work, I am just showing my results. Maybe I did something wrong? I understand the trees work as obstacles, that is the purpose of me trying to find something to boost the signal! If you have any opinions of what I could do or try for better results please leave a comment below.

You can purchase these on Amazon for only $19.99: http://amzn.to/294h41p

SKYREAT Copper Parabolic Antenna Range Booster for Phantom 4

I purchased these parabolic range boosters for my Phantom 4 with the hopes of increasing the connectivity of the Phantom 4 to the remote controller. I live on a mountain in a highly wooded area, so a lot of times when I am flying my Phantom 4 will lose connection to the remote controller for a few seconds. It doesn’t happen every single time, but it happens enough to where I wanted to try something with the hope of addressing this issue. I enjoy live streaming Vermont sunsets to Periscope several times a week, I am also hoping this might improve the signal quality for that as well.

A few tidbits about these — they easily fit on the antennas, you just slide them over the top and they stay pretty snug on them. They do seem to weigh the antennas down a tad, I noticed one of my antenna flopping left and right a tad; but I might just need to tighten them a bit to avoid this. These are ideal when using a smart-phone, when I put my iPad on the controller it seemed to rub against the antenna boosters due to the iPad being more heavy and causing the mount to sit lower to the controller a bit. Yes, I can adjust the mount too, but I like having my iPad sitting at more of an angle when flying. I am not saying they don’t fit with the iPad, I am just saying you will need to make adjustments, possibly.

I know there are ways to mod the remote to greatly improve the signal strength, or you can pay to have someone do that for you. Both those options are much more expensive, although I am sure the results are vastly superior. I decided to try this cheaper route to see if it improves my connectivity any at all. Most of the videos I have watched on YouTube claim these will get you about twice the range, while I am not going for distance, I am just hoping to see a slight improvement.

I also wanted to mention, the Phantom 4 is amazing and when I am in a clear, opened area, I have zero issues with connectivity. I only experience issues when I am flying at home on this glorious mountain I live on! I do plan on doing a second video to report any improvement in using these range boosters, if any at all!

You can purchase these on Amazon for only $19.99: http://amzn.to/294h41p.
